Brisa Lauren is the lead singer of the band "Lyrical Groove", winners of Best Hip Hop Soul Album at the 2015 San Diego Music Awards; the band also won the award for Best Artist in 2014 and 2017. In 2021 Brisa’s solo album "In Her Stillness..." was nominated for Best Soul Album, and she was the first Black woman to ever perform at the San Diego Music Awards.
Throughout her career, Brisa has been committed to using arts, culture, and community organizing as tools for connection, education, and social change in San Diego. Her work has consistently centered on creating spaces where artists, creatives, and activists can purposefully come together.
Working in social justice for 14 years and being an artist first, Brisa knows the importance of allowing art to be the anchor for movement work and not an accessory.
In her deeply personal upcoming album “What I’m Leaving Behind,” Brisa has written songs for the people who have been closest to her and had the most impact on her life. She says this about the work: “This album was created to leave behind the best parts of me. I wanted to write music that would continue to live after I'm gone. If my music were all that remained, I not only want it to speak for me, but to speak to everyone who made my life worth living—to continue to share my lessons and life with future listeners to come and to tell the people I love the things I would want them to remember if my music was all that was left.”
